Cleveland Guardians beat St. Louis Cardinals 7-3

The Cleveland Guardians defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 on Tuesday night at Progressive Field. José Ramírez and Ben Lively led the way for the Guardians, who improved to 5-3 on the season. Ramírez went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Lively allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. The Cardinals fell to 3-5 on the season. Paul DeJong homered for St. Louis, which has lost three of its last four games. The Guardians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty. Amed Rosario singled to lead off the game, and Ramírez followed with a double. Josh Naylor walked to load the bases, and Owen Miller singled in Rosario and Ramírez. Naylor scored on a sacrifice fly by Oscar Mercado. The Cardinals got one run back in the second inning on a solo home run by DeJong. But the Guardians answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Ramírez hit a solo home run, and Naylor singled in Miller to make it 5-1. The Cardinals scored two more runs in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. But the Guardians bullpen held the Cardinals scoreless over the final five innings to secure the win. Lively allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters and walked two. Sam Hentges, Nick Sandlin, and Eli Morgan combined to allow just one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings. Flaherty allowed five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked four. The Guardians will face the Cardinals again on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field. Aaron Civale will start for the Guardians, and Dakota Hudson will start for the Cardinals.
